Our Story
According to its records, Campbell is the oldest church of any denomination still in existence in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Almighty God has truly favored and prospered this congregation over the generations. In 1827, just 51 years after the colonies declared war on England, Campbell A.M.E. Church was established. This was also just 40 years after the founding of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, PA by Richard Allen. Media, PA was not even a borough at this time.
Families began meeting in the home of the late Charles and Jane Bruce in Chester County, PA. The newly-formed society met on a regular basis and was formally organized in May of 1871 as the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The church was later re-named Campbell after an early pastor, who went on to become the eighth Bishop of the A.M.E. Connection, The Right Reverend Jabez P. Campbell. They began to hold worship services in the old school house on the public school grounds in Media. The first sanctuary was located on Engle Street, between Front and Second Streets. It was purchased from John Broomall for one dollar ($1).
Despite slavery and all other hardships of the time for people of color, this budding congregation erected a brick edifice, with the exertion of William Murphy and the trustees, for the sum of Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000) and the church was dedicated on June 6, 1872. The cornerstone was laid and the building was paid for by 1917 under the pastorate of Rev. J.L. Link.
The County of Delaware “had need for this building/space” to provide space for a new jail, the site is now used for the current County Court House building. So, in 1930, under the leadership of the pastor, Rev. W.H. Hoxter and the trustees of Campbell A.M.E. church, the current site was purchased to house a new church and parsonage. This new site, on the corner of Third and Olive Streets, was purchased for $41,000. The first service was held in the new sanctuary in 1931 under Rev. Hoxter, and the cornerstone was laid at that time.
